Hypertension Treatment

Overview

Hypertension (high blood pressure) tops the list in the most common cardiovascular disorder which is the cause of morbidity and mortality. When the force of blood on the artery walls is more or greater than normal values which is 120mmHg systolic and 80 mmHg diastolic in a healthy adult, then the diagnosed condition is called hypertension. This condition can be treated by Ayurveda, an ancient Indian system of medicine which focuses on balancing the body's energies and doshas while  promoting the overall wellness of a human being.

In Ayurveda, hypertension is caused due to vata imbalance known as Raktagata Vata. In this condition, the vitiated Vata gets lodged in the circulating Rakta Dhatu (blood) and causes disturbances in its circulation. Causes of Hypertension

Hypertension generally occurs in two forms: Primary hypertension and Secondary hypertension. Primary hypertension is most common in individuals. Although specific causes of primary hypertension have not been identified. This blood pressure develops slowly over many years. Secondary hypertension occurs suddenly for which many causes and risk factors may be responsible -

  • Excessive salt intake

Individuals who have a high amount of salt in their diet may have hypertension problems. By consuming more salt, the presence of uric acid and albumin (a normal component of urine) in the person's body begins to increase and there is a possibility of blood arteries getting damaged. Therefore those people who take a high salt diet are more likely to have high blood pressure.

  • Obesity

The higher the weight of a person the more blood they need to supply oxygen and nutrients to their body. Based on which the amount of blood transported by the heart to the blood arteries increases. This puts more pressure on the walls causing this pressure to cause hypertension in the person.

  • Age

The increasing age of a person also increases their risk of hypertension. Women and men of sixty years of age have a higher risk of developing hypertension.

  • Family history

This disease caused by a member of the family may increase its risk to another member. Hypertension can be a disease in the family from one member to another.

  • Smoking

The arteries of people who smoke, slowly tend to narrow. The harmful chemicals present in bidi, cigarettes, and tobacco continue to damage the walls of the arteries reaching the body causing the person to suffer from hypertension as well as many other severe heart diseases.

  • Mental stress

A person's mind and thoughts are connected to his heart. When a person starts taking more stress, the sympathetic nervous system of the person which controls the level of consciousness starts responding to stress and this response also causes the heart rate to increase with blood pressure.

  • Excessive alcohol consumption

Regular or excessive consumption of alcohol leads to higher levels of triglycerides in the body which is a type of fat found in the blood due to which the average level of blood pressure can rise.

  • Physical inactivity

The physical activity of the person strengthens the muscles of their body. Due to lack of body movements, the heart rate of the person starts to be higher than usual, the pressure on the blood arteries associated with it increases, all conditions increase the risk of high blood pressure.

  • Certain medical conditions

People who have some medical conditions like diabetes, kidney disease, sleep apnea, some heart diseases are also at a higher risk of hypertension.

Hypertension Prevention

Individuals can try to keep blood pressure levels healthy by taking the following measures:

  • A healthy and balanced diet makes the heart-healthy
  • One should keep salt intake low or average in his diet.
  • Habits such as smoking and excessive consumption of alcohol should be avoided altogether
  • Activities like daily walks, exercises, yoga, and workout help a person to make their heart healthy.
  • A person should keep his increasing weight steady and make efforts to reduce the excess weight.
  • The person should have a blood pressure checkup regularly so that they are informed about ups and downs.
  • One should avoid taking mental stress.
  • In old age, a person should take special care of his health.

Types of Hypertension

Hypertension is mainly divided into two types -

  • Primary hypertension

Primary hypertension is also called essential hypertension. This blood pressure is usually seen in about 90 percent of people and no specific symptoms of this disease appear in such individuals. Primary hypertension develops over time. However, some patients face problems like fatigue, headache, and dizziness.

  • Secondary hypertension

When a person's blood pressure rises higher than average due to any other medical condition it is called secondary hypertension. Secondary hypertension is a sudden manifestation of blood pressure. Its cases occur in about 10 percent of the people. This is a condition that affects a person's kidneys, arteries, heart, and parts like the endocrine. Some common causes of thyroid, sleep apnea, hormonal imbalance, flatulence, and glucose intolerance, tumors of the adrenal glands, etc. increase the inequality of those arteries that supply blood to the kidneys.

Hypertension Complications

Uncontrolled high blood pressure can cause many complications -

  • Increased chances of heart attack or stroke
  • Cardiac failure
  • Weak kidneys and narrowed blood vessels
  • Damaged kidneys
  • Blockage in cerebral blood vessels
