  • Adenocarcinoma

These types of prostate cancer are very common which are seen in most people. About 90 to 95 percent of all prostate cancers fall in this category. Most of the cells in the prostate gland are gland-type cells. Adenocarcinoma is produced in these glandular cells. Adenocarcinomas of the prostate are fatal. These cancers spread to other parts of the body when they reach a certain size. There are two main subtypes of adenocarcinoma, which are -

Acinar adenocarcinoma

It is cancer initiated in acini cells. Approximately 9 out of 10 adenocarcinomas are acinar. In the prostate, the acini line the gland and produce fluid that eventually becomes semen. Acinar adenocarcinoma increases the level of prostate-specific antigen. The prostate-specific antigen is a substance produced by certain cells within the prostate gland of men.

Ductal adenocarcinoma

The remaining portions of adenocarcinoma are ductal. Ductal adenocarcinomas line the ducts of the prostate gland. This cancer begins in the tube of the prostate glands and does not affect the levels of prostate-specific antigens. Compared to acinar adenocarcinoma ductal adenocarcinoma spreads rapidly.

  • Sarcomas

Cases of this type of prostate cancer are very rare. Sarcomas develop in the soft tissues of the prostate. These tissues include muscles and nerves. Sarcomas begin in the smooth muscles of the prostate, lymph vessels, and blood vessels. Sarcoma does not affect prostate-specific antigen.

  • Neuroendocrine tumor

It is also known as a carcinoid. These tumors develop in the neuroendocrine system, which consists of hormone-producing glands and nerve cells in the bloodstream. These tumors start releasing their hormones which results in their symptoms in cells against some elements which is called carcinoid syndrome. These tumors grow slowly.

  • Small cell carcinoma

It is a form of neuroendocrine that is more common than neuroendocrine tumors. Small cell carcinomas are made up of small round cells. They are very aggressive but do not affect the levels of prostate-specific antigens.

  • Transitional cell carcinoma

Transitional cell carcinoma starting in the structures around the prostate gland is also known as urothelial cancer. The structures around the prostate gland include the urethra, the cells of a tube that carries urine out of the body, and the cells of the bladder where these transitional cell carcinomas develop as primary tumors and begin to spread locally.

  • Squamous cell carcinoma

This is a fast-growing type of prostate cancer that is often rare. Squamous cell carcinomas develop into flat cells covering the prostate gland and are very aggressive.

Stages of Prostate Cancer

Depending on the process and pace of development of cancer, prostate cancer is divided into four stages which are as follows -

  • First stage

In the first, prostate cancers are very small in size and are confined to the prostate gland, and do not spread beyond it.

  • Second stage

In the second stage, the size of prostate cancer increases and it extends outside the prostate gland.

  • Third stage

In its third stage, prostate cancer spreads outside the prostate gland to the tubes carrying semen.

  • Fourth stage

In its last stage, cancer spreads to the lymph nodes and other organs of the body.
