Motor Neuron Disease Treatment

Overview

A person's body and all activities related to them are managed and controlled by their brain. The brain and body are connected to each other by neurons, also called nerve cells, through which information is exchanged. A neuron is an excitatory cell located in the nervous system in the number of billions. Some neurons are present in the brain and spinal cord that send electrical waves to other nerve cells for the muscles of the body to function properly. These neurons are called motor neurons. On the one hand, the motor neurons present in the brain allow the muscles to speak, send commands, breathe and swallow and control these functions, on the other hand, the motor neurons of the spinal cord are part of the central nervous system which is connected to muscles, glands and organs throughout the body. These neurons transmit electrical waves through the spinal cord to other bones of the body and the soft muscles of the abdomen and thus control all the movements of our muscles.

When for some reason these motor neurons of the brain and spinal cord are affected, due to this there is a negative effect on the brain and nervous system, and the muscles associated with the brain and spinal cord stop working, resulting in the whole body of the person becomes very weak. This disorder involving nerve cells is known as motor neuron disease. Although this disease is very rare, which is seen in a few people, it is very fatal for the sufferer, which badly affects his life and daily activities.

By the use of this method, we are successfully dropping recurrence rates and giving a new path to the people's lifestyles so that they can stay their life in a higher way each emotionally and physically.

Causes of Motor Neuron Disease

This disease can occur to a person due to certain reasons and risk factors, which include -

  • Gene mutation

Some individuals inherit the disease, largely due to mutations in their genes. About 20% of motor neuron diseases passed from family member to member are caused by mutations in the SOD1 gene.

  • Virus

Exposure to certain types of viruses can increase a person's chances of developing motor neuron disease. As such, the poliovirus can infect motor neurons, and the latter may be associated with the weakening of these neurons. Retroviruses such as HIV are also potentially associated with the development of the disease.

  • Chemical exposure

Exposure to certain toxins and chemicals can cause a person to develop motor neuron disease. When individuals are exposed to toxic organophosphates for a long period of time, they may develop neurological disorders as a result. A person can also get this disease due to chemicals commonly used in solvents and insecticides.

  • Autoimmune disorders

An immune system reaction can damage and swell the neurons in a person's brain, which can lead to a person developing motor neuron disease. Usually, an autoimmune disorder occurs when the body's immune system mistakenly attacks healthy cells as foreign substances.

  • Age and gender

Although a person can develop motor neuron disease at any age, its risk is usually higher in individuals after the age of 40. At the same time, the risk of this disease is seen more in men than in women.

Prevention from Motor Neuron Disease

By making some of the following changes in their lifestyle, a person can reduce the risks of this disease and prevent it from progressing -

  • Regular consumption of a diet rich in antioxidants, vitamins, and proteins can reduce a person's risk of motor neuron disease.
  • Regular physical exercise can help maintain or improve strength in the muscles of the body and maintain flexibility in the affected muscles.
  • A stress-free life can help a person to maintain a happy mind.
  • As much as possible, one should avoid coming in contact with toxic substances and chemicals that are harmful to the body.
  • The strong immunity of the body protects the body from viruses and other diseases as well as strengthens the brain.
  • Excessive consumption of alcohol, excessive smoking weakens the brain cells, so a person should give up these habits.
  • A balanced body weight protects a person from many diseases and prevents abnormal pressure on the muscles of the body.

Symptoms of Motor Neuron Disease

Many symptoms and signs of this disease can be seen in a person, which includes -

  • Muscle pain
  • Weakness in arms and legs
  • Difficulty speaking
  • Muscle cramps
  • Difficulty swallowing or chewing
  • Weight loss
  • Extreme physical fatigue and weakness
  • Loss of grip
  • Having trouble thinking
  • Indecisiveness
  • Trouble breathing or shortness of breath
  • Change in personality
  • Change in the emotional state
  • Lack of sleep

Types of Motor Neuron Disease

Depending on the affected neuron, this disease is divided into the following types -

  • Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS)

This is the most common type of disease affecting both the upper and lower motor neurons of the brain and spinal cord. People with ALS lose control of the muscles that help them walk, talk, chew, swallow, and breathe. Over time these muscles become increasingly weak. Due to which problems like stiffness and twisting start happening in them. Symptoms include swelling in the muscles of the hands and feet, difficulty in walking, speaking, and breathing, and emotional changes in the person.

  • Progressive bulbar palsy (PBP)

PBP damages motor neurons in the brainstem, which is at the base of a person's brain. The brainstem is the structure that connects the brainstem to the spinal cord and cerebellum. PBP has also been seen to develop frequently in people with ALS. The brainstem contains some of the motor neurons that help a person chew, swallow and speak. This condition repeatedly causes suffocation, difficulty in speaking, eating, and swallowing.

  • Progressive Muscular Atrophy (PMA)

It is much less common than ALS or PBP. This is a rare condition that affects the lower motor neurons in the spinal cord. This slow but progressive muscle mass causes wasting, especially in the arms, legs, and mouth. This disease progresses slowly. Muscle weakness usually starts in the person's hands and then spreads to other parts of the body. Progressive muscular atrophy can be inherited by a person. Symptoms include muscle cramps and tremors, rapid weight loss, and sudden loss of body function.

  • Primary Lateral Sclerosis (PLS)

It is a rare, neuromuscular disorder that affects central motor neurons. It progresses more slowly than ALS. It is not fatal, but it can affect a person's quality of life. It causes weakness and stiffness in the hands and feet, slow movement, and poor coordination and balance. It causes stiffness and weakens the leg muscles. Over time the muscles become stiff and weak.

Complications of Motor Neuron Disease

A person suffering from motor neuron disease may face the following complications -

  • Involvement of the respiratory muscles in this disease can cause respiratory failure.
  • Difficulty in swallowing can make a person malnourished.
  • The person starts suffering from anxiety and depression.
  • Due to muscle weakness, individuals are unable to swallow their secretions, which increases the risk of pneumonia.
  • A situation of social isolation begins to arise in the individual.
  • The weakness of the hands and feet hinders the person from doing his daily activities, due to which his dependence on others starts increasing.
