Nephrotic Syndrome Treatment

Overview

Kidneys are two very important organs of a person's body that filter waste, excess fluid, and other impurities and remove them from the body in the form of urine. They also balance minerals and make hormones that help regulate blood pressure, make red blood cells, and keep our bones strong. Both kidneys of a person are made up of filtering units called nephrons. As a functional unit, the nephron is the structure of the kidney that produces urine in the process of removing waste and excess substances from the blood. There are about one million nephrons in each kidney. Each nephron of the kidney has blood vessels and a special tubule. At the beginning of each nephron, there is a group of small blood vessels known as the glomerulus. More than one glomerulus is called glomeruli. The glomeruli act like a sieve. The glomerulus filters the blood and the glomeruli filter out water, glucose, salts, and urea and allow waste and excess water to pass into the nephron to form urine.

When a group of small blood vessels is damaged due to some reason, a large amount of protein comes out of the body with urine, resulting in a decrease in the amount of protein in the blood. This condition of the kidney is called Nephrotic Syndrome. When the glomeruli are damaged, too much protein passes through the filter into the urine, which leads to an increase in cholesterol in the body, swelling of the eyes, face, and stomach, and many other health problems. The disease can happen to a person of any age, but it is mostly seen in children between 2 and 6 years of age.
